Introduction to Project Management
Course Overview
The Introduction to Project Management is designed to provide a sound understanding of best practice project management to practicing and aspiring project team members, recently appointed project managers, aspiring project managers and anyone wishing to learn more about project management. This workshop describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage a straightforward project or a section of a larger project; it addresses the management of projects including the development of a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project to identify lessons learnt for application to future projects.
This workshop is not designed for specialist project managers. For specialist project managers, specific qualifications in the Project Management competency field will be more applicable.
The course provides participants with a working knowledge of project management principles and processes and the application of tools, techniques and methods crucial to a successful project. The optional assessment fulfils the requirements for a Statement of Attainment in BSBPMG510A Manage Projects (AQF Level 5). Together with the additional three-day Certificate IV in Project Management Case Study workshop and assessment, it will fulfil the requirements for a nationally recognised BSB 41507 Certificate IV in Project Management.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Describe the project management framework as set out in current Australian and International Standards
- Describe the main similarities, differences and relationship of the PMBOK® Guide and PRINCE2™
- Demonstrate the competencies required to work successfully as a project team member
- Contribute to the initiation, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing under the direction of a project manager and working with other project team members, and
- Understand the relationship of organisational systems required within a project management environment.
Topics Covered
The Introduction in Project Management addresses the Competency Standard BSBPMG510A Manage Projects within the BSB07 Business Services Training Package. Award of a Statement of Attainment requires completion of five elements:
- BSBPMG510A, Element 1 – Define project
- BSBPMG510A, Element 2 – Develop project plan
- BSBPMG510A, Element 3 – Administer and monitor project
- BSBPMG510A, Element 4 – Finalise project
- BSBPMG510A, Element 5 – Review project
Delegate Participation
You will be involved in discussions throughout the course that will allow you to consider application within your work environment. Case studies will provide practical exercises that serve to reinforce lecture sessions and provide an opportunity to apply the theory to your real projects and form a basis for your post-course assessment.
Assessment
All personnel who complete the two-day Introduction to Project Management will receive a Statement of Attendance.
To earn the optional Statement of Attainment for BSBPMG510A Manage Projects, participants must:
- Attend the 2 day Introduction to Project Management workshop. This workshop finalises the formal learning and supports participants in preparation for a competency-based assessment.
- Complete an optional competency assessment against assessment elements in the Assessment Kit.
- Attend an assessment interview to present your project evidence and discuss the application of project management competencies within the workplace, and complete the assessment within three months of workshop completion.
Course Prerequisites
There are no specific prerequisites for this course other than proficiency in written and spoken English.
Articulation Pathways
Graduates receiving BSBPMG510A receive credit for Module 1 of BSB41507 Certificate IV in Project Management, which they may receive through successful completion of Module 2, Intensive Case Study. Alternatively, graduates may continue on to attend BSB51407 Diploma of Project Management and/or PRINCE2™ Foundation Certificate training.
Who Should Attend?
This introductory workshop has been developed for people new to or soon to become project managers; project team members; administrators, tradespeople and others who manage projects that may not require the full spectrum of project techniques; anyone starting out in the field of project management; those who wish to improve their project skills and knowledge; and client representatives who will have an essential input to the project management process.
