  • PRINCE2 is recognised worldwide and is the standard method for project management.

PRINCE2® QUALIFICATIONS

There are currently two qualifications available for PRINCE2®.

  • Foundation
  • Practitioner

PRINCE2® Accreditation

  • If you want to become a Registered Practitioner, you MUST sit the PRINCE2 Foundation Examination and then the PRINCE2 Practitioner Examination, in that order.
  • If you pass both examinations in the same week, you will receive a Practitioner Certificate but not a Foundation Certificate - as you cannot sit the Practitioner exam without first having passed the Foundation, it is not necessary to send a separate Foundation Certificate.

The updated PRINCE2® Qualification Scheme was launched on July 6th 2009.

PRINCE2® Foundation level

The Foundation is the first of the two PRINCE2 Examinations you are required to pass to become a PRINCE2 Practitioner.

This level is aiming to measure whether a candidate would be able to act as an informed member of a project management team using the PRINCE2 method within a project environment supporting PRINCE2. To this end they need to show they understand the principles and terminology of the method, specifically, candidates must be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and major content of all roles, the seven themes, the seven processes and the sub-processes, and the techniques
  • State which management products are input to, and output from the seven processes
  • State the main purpose, and key contents, of the major management products
  • State the relationships between processes, deliverables, roles and the management dimensions of a project.

PRINCE2® foundation examination format

  • Multiple choice format
  • One hour duration
  • Closed-book
  • 75 questions per paper - 5 questions to be trial and not counted in scores
  • 35 marks required (out of 70 available) to pass.

PRINCE2® practitioner level

This level is aiming to measure whether a candidate could apply PRINCE2 to the running and managing of a non-complex project within an environment supporting PRINCE2. To this end they need to exhibit the competence required for the Foundation qualification, and show that they can apply and tailor PRINCE2 to address the needs and problems of a given project scenario.

  • Know or comment on detailed explanations of all processes, themes and techniques, and worked examples of all PRINCE2 management products as they might be applied to address the particular circumstances of a given project scenario
  • Demonstrate that they understand the relationships between processes, themes, techniques and PRINCE2 management products and can apply this understanding
  • Demonstrate that they understand the reasons behind the processes, themes and techniques of PRINCE2
  • Demonstrate their ability to the tailor PRINCE2 to different project environments.

The PRINCE2 Practitioner exam is in the "Objective Testing" format, a style of complex multiple choice examination.

PRINCE2® practitioner examination format

  • 9 questions per paper with 12 marks available per question
  • 59 marks required (out of 108 available) to pass - 55%
  • 2.5 hours allowed (no extra reading time)
  • Open-book examination (only the PRINCE2 Manual is allowed).
 Important Note on the Pass Mark: As of July 6th 2009 the pass mark for the Practitioner exam has changed from 50% to 55%.

Re-Registration Clarification

  • Both Foundation and Practitioner certificates never expire;
  • Re-Registration examinations only apply to products where there is a validity period shown on the Practitioner certificate;
  • Candidates may take the Re-Registration examination in the period 3-5 years after their original examination date - if they are successful, they will then be issued with a new certificate confirming registered status for another 5 years;
  • Sitting the Re-Registration examination is optional for ‘normal’ candidates, but mandatory for trainers and consultants to demonstrate current knowledge;
  • Even if candidates choose not to take the Re-Registration examination, their Practitioner qualification will still not expire. They maintain their Practitioner status (demonstrating that they have taken and passed the exam) but lose the status of Registered Practitioner (which demonstrates they have kept their knowledge up to date, as we recommend);
  • If a candidate is outside the 5 year period and then decides they want to update, they still only have to sit the Re-Registration examination and not the full Practitioner.
